Lightning cables. We all about them. We’ve covered replacement cables made by 3rd party manufacturers for many popular high-end headphones including replacement lightning cables for:
One company you don’t see on this list however is the much lauded V-Moda, maker of the EDM community’s perennial favorite CrossFade cans.
With the release of their Bluetooth CrossFade 2 Codex addition, with integrated AAC (Apples high-quality Bluetooth codex) V-Moda became a popular go-to set of bass-heavy cans for Apple lovers.
- V-MODA Award-Winning signature sound (50+ editors' Choice Awards) both in wireless and wired mode
- Qualcomm apt audio CODEC for CD quality wireless audio playback + AAC and SBC Codecs for universal compatibility
- Lithium-ion battery provides up to 14+ hours of continuous music, entertainment and calls; 30mins fast charge = 4hrs playback; unlimited hours in wired mode
Well, originally released in November 2018, V-Moda now produces their own headphone cable that terminates in a Lightning connector so V-Moda users can now plug their cans directly into their Apple devices.
Sure it ain’t cheap, but is it really that expensive when you look at what you get with this new cable?
Why the SpeakEasy Is Worth the Price
First, the SpeakEasy is a expensive because it is an original V-Moda component. Unlike many of the other replacement cables out there the SpeakEasy is guaranteed to to work with your V-Moda device.
Also being a genuine V-Moda part you get their unmatched build quality and lifetime warranty.
Many replacement cables are made by 3rd party companies, so there is always a little risk when it comes to compatibility with your phone and your headphone set.
The SpeakEasy is Apple-certified (MFi- Apples Approved Manufacturer certificate) so it is guaranteed to work with your Apple product.
These things alone make it worth the price, but it isn’t all about build quality and reliability, the SpeakEasy has some neat features as well.
Cable Features & Specs
Weighting 17.5 grams the SpeakEasy has an integrated 31mW amplifier (V-Moda’s VAMP technology) to better drive the driver units and produce clear, distinguished sound even at high volumes.
The cable also features a built in DAC (digital-to-analog-converter) for improved audio quality compared to listening to the direct digital signal from your Apple device.
So does this drain my phone battery? Nope. The SpeakEasy’s power consumption is comparable to a standard 3.5mm cable with less than a 5% energy consumption variance.
Of course there is a three-button control as well for navigating your music without having to take your phone out as well as respond to incoming phone calls.
The cable is typical V-Moda over-engineering, built to withstand over 1M bends without fraying, and which is terminated in a 24K gold (in) plug to plug into the headphones themselves (with a Lightning pin on the “out” other end).
The coolest part though? V-Moda says that this cable will also work with Beats, Philips, Hyper X, Audio Technica, and Skull Candy headphones as well!
If this is true, which we will be scouring the forums to confirm, then we may finally have a truly premium, trustworthy replacement cable option for high end headphones.
This is clutch as it doesn’t look like the Lightning-only iPhones are going anywhere soon and being able to plug directly into an iPhone XS, MAX, or XR for example is a godsend for frequent travelers and commuters.
Time to kiss that dongle goodbye! You can shop the SpeakEasy cable direct from V-Moda’s website, available in both black and grey options.
